Review: Magonia

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was so beautiful, it was like reading poetry.

"And all night, I'm thinking about how whatever I heard coming out of the sky, it wasn't English, and it wasn't even really words. But it was familiar. I felt it in my bones, in the strangest way.
I felt like something was ringing me like a bell."

Aza Ray Boyle is an anomaly. A fish out of water. She was born with a unique lung disease that no one in the world has ever seen. She was told she would only live a couple months, then years, but she miraculously has surpassed all expectations. Until she takes a turn for the worst near her sixteenth birthday. She knows it's bad when her best and only friend, Jason, suddenly stops going to school to celebrate her birthday early. Aza Ray has always felt weak and brittle in her body, even though her mind is sharp and witty. She wasn't born for this world, which becomes more and more apparent as hallucinations of birds and ships seem to be calling to her from the sky, calling her home. But is it Heaven calling her, or something else entirely?

Magonia is a one of a kind novel, the language is beautiful, the characters complex, and the feelings it evokes are tangible. I loved Aza and Jason's quick wit and affinity for factoids. It has a conversational writing style, which I normally don't enjoy, but Headley did it really well in this one. The story is so unique, it's hard to think of something to compare it to. At first, it reads like a John Green novel, similar to The Fault in Our Stars, but then it becomes something totally unexpected. You will feel confused, conflicted, and concerned at times as Aza discovers her true nature. You just have to read it for yourself.

Mature content: profanity, death, mentions pornography.
