Serpent & Dove by Shelby MahurinMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
"'Perhaps a mutually beneficial arrangement can be made [...] It's quite simple, really - marriage.'"
In Serpent and Dove, witches are persecuted and hunted by a religious order of hunters called Chasseurs. One witch in particular, Lou, is sought by both groups. She has spent two years living in the streets to avoid detection of witches and Chasseurs alike, until a tricky situation ends up with her being coerced into a shotgun wedding with none other than the captain of the Chasseurs himself. How will these enemies handle the forced marriage?
This book is told from the perspectives of Lou and Reid, the witch and the Chasseur captain. There is a lot of French influence in the story and dialogue. It draws from the Romeo and Juliet/enemies to lovers trope in more than one instance. I loved Lou's brazen attitude and her irreverent humor, she had me laughing all the time at the beginning. Plus a couple of plot twists I didn't see coming! Mahurin's writing style is reminiscent of Sarah J. Maas. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it was a very fun and quick read.
Mature Content: profanity, crude humor, sex, sexual innuendo, violence, death, self-harm.
