Review: Illuminae

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

"You deserve every star in the galaxy laid out at your feet and a thousand diamonds in your hair. You deserve someone who'll run with you as far and as fast as you want to. Holding your hand, not holding you back."
--Illuminae

Mason and Kady thought their recent break-up was a huge deal, until their planet was attacked by an intergalactic corporation. They manage to be some of the few who escape the planet, but are placed on different space vessels. Thus begins the chase through space, and Kady and Mason play vital parts in the fight for their freedom.

What I thought was the most interesting aspect of Illuminae was that the whole book is designed to look like a compilation of classified files. As such, the narration is very unique. I loved the banter between Mason and Kady, it really took me back to my middle school years. This book will mess with your head and your heart!

The plot is a lot darker than I realized it would be, I feel like some of it will be a little disturbing to younger readers. I would highly recommend looking at the content warnings before reading it or getting it for someone else.

Overall, I enjoyed this unique take on a thrill ride through space and second-chance love. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars!
