Review: Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle #1)

Aurora Rising Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"The challenges that await you may be unlike any you've imagined. But we have every faith in your ability to see it through. No matter what may come. You must endure."

Tyler was only doing what he imagined any other would do when he answered a distress call, despite the risk to his life. He managed to rescue a young woman who was the sole survivor of a lost colony ship. Because of his heroics, Tyler missed out on the big day to choose his top picks from the pool of cadets to form his new squad, leaving him with the last available options: a bunch of outcasts with some serious attitude problems. For their first official mission, the squad complains about having to perform a lowly supply-run to the opposite end of the universe. They never imagined that among their cargo, a stowaway would drastically change their lives and make them responsible for saving their galaxy.

What a fun read! Aurora Rising is a sci-fi novel about a newly-formed squad of young misfits, each with incredible skills. It is unique in that it is told from seven different perspectives: one for each squad member. The characters are so likeable, though some more than others. Of course, I love a good sassy AI trope, even though Magellan isn't technically an AI, he's still one of my favorite characters. I wish they would have let him finish his sentences more often though. I'm also a sucker for the soulmate trope, and I think it was very cleverly played in this book. I was chuckling may way through this book; I loved the squad's bantering! This one was hard to put down.

Mature content: profanity, sexual innuendo, graphic deaths
