Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa BashardoustMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
"There's something restless growing within you. We're all very curious to see what happens when it breaks free."
Girl, Serpent, Thorn is loosely based on ancient Persian mythology. Soraya is a princess who has been hidden away for her whole life, due to a curse placed upon her that makes her poisonous to the touch. When she learns that her twin brother is set to marry her best friend and childhood crush, Laleh, jealousy and resentment begin to fester and fuel her desire to free herself from the years of shame and solitude. That, and a handsome, young guard who says all the right things to make her feel beautiful and willing to turn her back on a family who has done nothing but stash her away. However, Soraya later learns that there is much that she doesn't understand about her curse.
This book throws off some major Frozen vibes mixed with Beauty and the Beast. I really enjoyed the originality of this tale and the journey Soraya takes as she learns who to trust and as she discovers herself. Her character development feels very deep and real. Bashardoust keeps you on your toes the whole time, keeping you wondering who really is trustworthy and what it really means for Soraya to be true to herself.
Mature content: death.
