Review: Ruin and Rising (Shadow and Bone #3)

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If it's not a love triangle... is it a love square?

"You live in a single moment. I live in a thousand."

This review contains minor spoilers for the first two books of the series.

In Ruin and Rising, the Apparat was considerate enough to offer Alina and her friends sanctuary, but only grant them enough privileges as to align with his own goals. Alina feels an unrelenting desire to find and take the third amplifier, which is thought to be the mythical firebird. Her childhood friend, the clever prince, and the Darkling all chase after her heart, but Alina only has eyes for the firebird. What will win in the end? Darkness or light? Greed or sacrifice?

This was a quick read! I enjoyed the dynamic between Alina and her friends. It was a refreshing change of pace to have so many people supporting her without having their own purpose behind it. As always, I adored every moment that involved Nikolai. He is my favorite character by far, so I'm really looking forward to reading the new series about him! Also, can we talk about that plot twist? I did not see it coming at all.

To be honest I didn't find the ending very satisfying. A certain person coming back after their grand sacrifice [if you read it I'm sure you know who] didn't really fit with the story in my opinion. But it did make for a sweet after story.

Mature content: death, violence, sexual innuendo, mild profanity.
