To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Phew... that was one action-packed adventure!
"There's no such thing as safety. Only degrees of risk."
Years after the release of Eragon, Paolini is finally back with his first adult novel, and it won best sci-fi of the year in 2020 in the Goodreads Choice Awards!
It's the year 2257 and humanity is spreading itself throughout the galaxy. Kira Navárez works as a xenobiologist for a company that researches potential inhabitable worlds. As humans expand their reach, they optimistically search for any sign of other sentient species. Kira's team is about to leave the planet they're studying when she stumbles upon a curious rock structure. Little did she know, the microscopic dust particles she discovered would have life-threatening, intergalactic consequences.
To Sleep in a Sea of Starts has almost non-stop action, well thought out tech, and #squadgoals! I adore an eccentric AI (or in this case "ship mind"). It's a pet-peeve of mine in sci-fi novels when the aliens resemble humans, so I really appreciate the creativity that Paolini put into the alien species of this book. The characters are so charming that by the end I had really come to love them. Kira's character development is fantastic, as she evolves in every sense of the word.
I love having romance incorporated into any book, but I don't feel like Paolini really committed to the it in this one. I would understand if he didn't want to distract too much from the plot, but the attempt at romance left me a little underwhelmed. I would have liked to have seen more romantic tension or just have the romance left out, because I wasn't feeling it.
The best quote in the book: "PUT DOWN THAT PIG!"
Overall I would give this 4.5 out of 5 stars! I'm unsure when to expect the next book, but I've heard that this is going to have a film adaptation. Fingers crossed that it turns out better than the Eragon movie!
