Review: Reverie

Reverie by Ryan La Sala

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Drag queens, day-dreams, and lost memories--oh my!

"The things we cannot outrun are the things we must fight..."--Reverie

Reverie is a fun story of a boy who woke up from a coma with no memories of his summer break and discovered that he was the main suspect in a criminal investigation. He slowly discovers his lost relationships and other-worldly powers. In his quaint little town, dreams can come to life, drawing in other people nearby to act out the characters in their story. But dangerous plot twists can turn a simple story into a deadly one. Something more sinister seeks the source of all these reveries... who will control it in the end?

I loved the concept of this book! I would totally watch a show about a group of teens trying to help people through their reveries, it sounded so fun! There were a lot of events that happened before the start of the book, so it kind of felt like reading the second book in a series, where all the characters keep mentioning things that happened earlier, but not in this book. This book is a standalone so that was a little strange too me because I felt like I was missing out on a lot. The main character was occasionally very frustrating because of his self-sabotaging tendencies. I liked the concept and the quirky villain the most, but I wish they had resolved the police investigation at the end.

Mature content: profanity, underage drinking, mild sensuality, violence.
