Review: This Savage Song

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm not usually one for Dystopian novels, but I was captivated by this one!

"Sunai, Sunai,
eyes like coal,
sing you a song
and steal your soul."

-This Savage Song

This Savage Song is a Romeo and Juliet retelling without the romance but with an addition of monsters! It is told from the perspectives of Katherine Harker and August Flynn, children of the bosses of the two sides of Verity city. The city has been ravaged by monsters that are giving life from the sinful acts of criminals. The North and South sides of the city have very different ideas about how to handle the situation, so they have a deteriorating truce that binds them to their side of the Seam.

Until August is sent on a mission to infiltrate Katherine's high school on the North side, so that he can keep an eye on her. Katherine is a tough-as-nails teen who wants to emulate her father's bloody leadership skills. August may look human, but he is something else entirely. Only they see the two sides of the city for what they really are. But when the monsters come for them, which side can they flee to? Is any one truly better than the other?

This Savage Song starts off strong, drawing me in from the first line. Music is a key theme in the novel, which I thought was a really nice touch. In a fascinating turn of events, the monster has a higher moral standing than the human girl. August is my favorite character; his identity crisis tugged on my heart, and his abilities are unique and charming. The writing held my attention and made it difficult to put down. It wasn't until the very end that the pacing seemed to slow down. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

Mature content: violence, murder, profanity, drug use, arson, torture.
