The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune
This is the coziest, most therapeutic book I've read this year!
"There's music everywhere, Mr. Baker. You just have to learn to listen for it."
Linus Baker has spent 17 years in the same job position without any dreams of promotion or any advancement at all. He is the self-conscious, nervous, people-pleasing type, but he has a big heart, which becomes apparent when he works with magical children in their orphanages.
Since he has spent his whole life trying to do what is expected of him, he nearly has a heart attack when he is summoned to the aloof Extremely Upper Management. They have a top-secret assignment for Mr. Baker, one that will turn his life upside down, and maybe even the world too. His poor heart could never be prepared for what is to come.
The House in the Cerulean Sea is a real gem. It's a very light-hearted, cozy, urban fantasy. I was enchanted by the setting, the quaint orphanage on the island provided a relaxing mental image. The magical orphans were so endearing and their banter had me laughing constantly!
The most difficult part of this book for me was that I couldn't relate to the main character at all. A 40-year-old, rotund, gay man is nearly my complete opposite, however I suppose we have our social anxiety in common. This made the beginning hard to get through. Even so, it didn't take me very long to get into the book. The romance is very sweet and I adored the character development. I highly recommend this one!
Mature content: abuse, mild profanity.
