Review: Daughter of the Pirate King

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A pirate-y princess who will slice you in two before you can lay a hand on her? Watch out!

"I live on the cusp of two worlds, trying desperately to fit into one."
--Daughter of the Pirate King

Alosa is a fiercely determined pirate captain on a mission from her father: to fake her own capture so that she can search an enemy ship for a piece of the map that leads to an island full of treasure. Her clever wit allows her plan to go through flawlessly. Once aboard, however, the real trouble begins.

Daughter of the Pirate King is a young adult fantasy romance. Alosa is a confident and powerful protaganist, and her charade as a weak princess is entertaining when we know how gruesome her thoughts are. She is no stranger to the most evil acts a person can commit. Her cockiness and type A personality makes the book a humorous first-person read. The story moves quickly, and I was surprised at how difficult it was to put down!

The writing is simple, which is part of what makes it such a quick read. There is not a lot of description and the characters make a lot of bold jumps to conclusions. Alosa's vanity was funny, but perhaps a little overused. The budding romance was warm, but both characters are quite thickheaded when it comes to their feelings. I wish there was a little more depth to them.

In sum, I really enjoyed this because it was a funny, quick read. I stayed up too late reading this one! I give it 3.75/5 stars!

Mature content: profanity, much violence, torture, murder, drinking, threats of sexual assault, mild sensuality.
