Dark Shores by Danielle L. Jensen
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
The Roman Empire meets Pirates of the Caribbean in this Dark Fantasy Romance!
"If anyone touches her, I will personally rip the skin off the perpetrator's back."
Teriana is the heir to the leader of the seafaring people who, up until now, had been left to their own devices. However, the newly-elected consul has set his sights on conquering the eastern continent and Teriana's people have kept the means of traveling there a well-guarded secret. Many died keeping it safe, but Teriana struck a deal with the fearsome (and, of course, handsome) Legatus Marcus that would guarantee the freedom of her people as long as she guided his armies to the Dark Shores.
How far are they willing to go for the people they care about?
Dark Shores is inspired by the Roman Empire, but it also brings to mind the infamous voyage of Christopher Columbus. The magic in this book is granted by the seven gods, but we don't see as much of it in this book as I expected. I wanted to know more about the god-marked people. There are a lot of Latin terms in this book and it was occasionally difficult to keep them straight, but there is a helpful glossary in the back. The romance was nice, just not the slow-burn, heart-wrenching type that I prefer.
An excellent pirate-y adventure for lovers of Dark Fantasy! I gave it 3.5 stars.
Mature content: profanity, underage drinking, violence, death, torture, sexual innuendo, moderate sensuality.
