WOW, this book is a MUST-READ!
"Don't make your life about the loss. Make it about the love."
Sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews has just lost her mother in what appears to be an accident. She needs to get away from home and all the painful reminders of her mom, so she goes off with her best friend, Alice, to attend Early College. It is there that she discovers that her world is not everything it once appeared to be. The world is infused with magic, and she has a mysterious inheritance that could change the world.
I loved this book! Reading it felt vividly like watching a TV show. The magic system is really cool and unique. It deals with a lot of difficult themes like grief, racism, and misogyny. There are monsters, balls, and magical bonds! There's also a little romance that developed just a little too quickly for my taste (I prefer slow-burn), but it was cute nonetheless. Sometimes the terminology could be a little confusing, but I understood it by the end. I think one of the best parts of the book is that it gives you an inkling of what it might feel like to live in the world as a person of color, it discusses all of the aforementioned themes, and it still manages to be really entertaining.
Add this book to the top of your TBR immediately! You won't regret it.
Mature content: profanity, underage drinking, sexual innuendo, violence.
